Former Vice President Mike Pence is predicting the demise of Roe v. Wade and urging the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe. Pence made the remarks in a speech he gave at the Life is a Human Right event hosted by the Susan B. Anthony List at the National Press Club on Tuesday.

“When the Supreme Court overturns Roe vWade — and I believe with all my heart that day will come, either now or in the near future — it will not come as a surprise to anyone. It will simply be the culmination of a 50-year journey whose course and destination have been set by the will of the American people,” Pence said in his remarks.

“Every serious legal scholar in America knows that the Roe decision was manufactured out of whole cloth to achieve a predetermined political and ideological goal. Even the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg once wrote that the Court’s decision in Roe was ‘heavy-handed judicial intervention that was difficult to justify.’ Now our Supreme Court has a chance to right that historic wrong once and for all.”

The remarks come on the eve of the U.S. Supreme Court’s consideration of a case that could be one of the most consequential in decades for the right of states to protect preborn life.

On December 1, the nation’s highest court will hear arguments in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

Jackson Women’s Health Organization is an abortion clinic in Mississippi, which performs abortions on babies between six- and 16-weeks gestation.

In 2018, Mississippi enacted the Gestational Age Act, which prohibits abortions after 15-weeks gestation, with exceptions for medical emergency and severe fetal abnormalities. Because it wants to be able to perform abortions in those last two weeks prohibited by Mississippi law, the abortion clinic sued the state.

It’s possible that the Supreme Court could use the case to overturn its previous abortion precedent decreed in Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. Together, these two cases make it nearly impossible for states to limit abortions before a baby would be considered viable outside the womb, which generally occurs around 24-weeks gestation.

“We are asking the Court, in no uncertain terms, to make history,” Pence said. “We are asking the Supreme Court of the United States to overturn Roe v. Wade and restore the sanctity of human life to the center of American law.”

As we wrote yesterday, “consider fasting and praying for justice to prevail. Pray for wisdom for the attorneys who will be arguing Mississippi’s case. Pray that the justices will be receptive to their arguments. And pray that a culture of life will be restored to our nation.”

The case is Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
