Baby on Board: NYPD Officer Escorts Expectant Parents to Hospital

When expectant mother Sasha Cheng went into labor in traffic, her husband, Daniel, wasn’t left with many options. New York traffic stops for no one.

Or, rather, New York traffic stops everyone.

The Chengs had to make it from Bay Ridge to a hospital in Lower Manhattan — a long, crowded drive Sasha couldn’t afford to make.

Enter NYPD Officer Joseph An, whom Daniel spotted parked on the Gowanus Expressway. When he explained the situation, An didn’t hesitate to escort the frantic family to the hospital, clearing the way with his police lights.

Sasha required surgery to give birth to her healthy baby boy, Royce. If An had chosen to wait for an ambulance or refused to escort the Chengs, doctors say Sasha would have needed general anesthesia that would have put her and Royce at greater risk of complications.

After Royce’s birth, the Chengs couldn’t find An to thank him. The officer eventually returned with a stuffed animal, a card, and an official NYPD Highway Patrol Patch.

We don’t know if An is a believer, but his actions follow what the Bible commands Christians to do on countless occasions: love our neighbors as ourselves.

An’s willingness to help the Chengs shows the courage and decency of the vast majority of peace officers, who use their position for good. The Daily Citizen thanks all men and women of law enforcement for their sacrifice and bravery.

The cherry on top? That story’s going to kill at Thanksgiving dinner.
