Voters in California will decide on a ballot measure that adds “reproductive freedom” to the state constitution. Proposition 1 gives unlimited access to abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy, allowing for healthy babies to be killed right until the moment of birth.

It’s one of many anti-life measures passed by the legislature and signed into law after Roe v. Wade was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in the Dobbs decision.

As our allies at California Family Council (CFC) report, “Currently in California, abortion is legal only up to the point of viability, unless the mother’s life or health is endangered.”

But radical abortionists want more. Proposition 1, “The Right to Reproductive Freedom Act” amends the state constitution to place no restrictions on abortion at all. It reads:

The state shall not deny or interfere with an individual’s reproductive freedom in their most intimate decisions, which includes their fundamental right to choose to have an abortion and their fundamental right to choose or refuse contraceptives.

The California Senate voted in favor of placing the constitutional amendment on the ballot with a vote of 29 in favor and 8 against. The House approved the measure 58 to 17.

California Family Council president Jonathan Keller called the proposed amendment “extreme, even for a state like California.”

“Many people who identify as pro-choice still reject the idea of abortions ending the lives of viable children late in pregnancy,” he explained.

CFC says:

As Christians, we know that all human life is valuable and worthy of protection by our laws from conception through natural death. While many in our culture reject this biblical standard, polls indicate that most Californians want abortion limited at some point before birth.

The organization stated:

Proposition 1, if approved by the voters, will put California in the same category as a small number of nations, like North Korea and China, that permit late-term abortion, even when the mother’s life is not in danger and even when the healthy baby could survive outside the womb.

The legislature passed, and the governor signed into law, 15 abortion bills this year. The measures include:

  • Allocating more than $200 million this year to expand abortion and reproductive services, including tens of millions to pay the expenses for abortion seekers from other states.
  • Creating an abortion website with information about how, where and when to access abortion services, including instructions for out-of-state minors on how to get an abortion in California without their parents’ permission and a section informing undocumented immigrants on how they can obtain taxpayer-funded coverage for abortion.
  • Lowering health standards for abortions by allowing nurse practitioners and nurse-midwives to perform first-trimester abortions without the supervision of a physician.
  • Allocating $20 million of taxpayer money for women from other states to travel to California to receive an abortion.

The state also launched a billboard campaign, “buying billboards in Texas, Indiana, Ohio, Mississippi, South Dakota, South Carolina, and Oklahoma.”

CFC reported that they read, “Need an abortion? California is ready to help,” among other pro-abortion messages.

The group goes on to state that the billboards in Mississippi and Oklahoma quote Jesus in Mark 12 to justify abortion, proclaiming, “Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no greater commandment than these.”

CFC called this “a deeply perverted justification for helping women obtain abortion.”

With all that, California is set to become more extreme, if Proposition 1 passes.

Early voting in California begins October 10, and voters will decide whether the state constitution should include this unlimited access to abortion – up until the moment of birth.
