A Colorado man was shot and killed in Miami, Florida on Tuesday night while protecting his wife and 1-year-old son.

Dustin Wakefield, 21, and his family were dining at La Cerveceria in Miami where they had gone for vacation, KDVR reports.

That’s when Wakefield’s alleged assailant, 22-year-old Tamarius Blair Davis, randomly assaulted Dustin because he “was high on mushrooms, which made him feel empowered,” Davis told police following his arrest.

According to Dustin’s uncle Mike Wakefield, who heard about the account from his family, Dustin died protecting his wife and son.

“This guy came in with a gun waving it, saying it’s time to die. He pointed the gun at his son and Dustin said, ‘He’s only a boy.’

“Dustin stood up between the gunman and the baby and he shot him. He shot him multiple times on the ground,” Mike added.

Angela Wakefield, Dustin’s stepmother, told FOX31 about the extraordinary man that Dustin was.

“There are few words in the English language that can convey the depth of Dustin’s love and generosity,” she said.

“For us, his family, he was the best son/brother/uncle/cousin/nephew/grandson you could ask for. His heart always put others first, even from a young age. As a man, he was a faithful and loving husband. Karina is the love of his life, and she knows it. His love for her should inspire us. As a father he was full of love and pride. His son knows he is loved,” she added.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by Dustin’s uncle, which as of publishing time has raised $189,690.

“Dustin leaves behind a family that is very young with a young son too,” his uncle wrote. “With the tragedy that happened yesterday in Miami, Dustin’s family will be need all the help they can get thank you very much.”

Jesus taught in John 15:12-13, “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”

While we don’t know whether Dustin was a man of faith, we do know that by giving his life to protect his wife and baby, he emulated the love that Christ has for all of us. Dustin showed the true meaning of love and will be remembered for exactly that.

Please pray for Dustin’s wife and young son.
