Last Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a historic opinion overruling Roe v. Wade and returning lawmaking authority over abortion back to the states.

“The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives,” the court held.

Now, the people and their elected state representatives will be able to create laws regulating or prohibiting abortion without the interference of federal courts.

This momentous ruling is a massive victory for the pro-life movement and has been 49 years in the making. It absolutely deserves much celebration and praise.

But what’s next for the pro-life movement?

On today’s Focus on the Family Broadcast, Focus President Jim Daly is joined by law professor Helen Alvaré and Dr. Al Mohler to discuss last week’s Supreme Court decision.

The Broadcast is titled, “Roe v. Wade Overturned: Now What?”

The two guests provide analysis of the opinion, discuss the impact that the decision will have and explain how believers need to continue to be involved in the fight for life.

“As of today, moving forward, every state is permitted, once again, to make laws about abortion. Some will protect it. Some will protect unborn human life,” Prof. Alvaré said.

Dr. Mohler celebrated the ruling and cast it in light of God’s grace.

“I have to put this within the context of God’s mercy, and just say, this is the day the Lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it,” Dr. Mohler said. “As a Christian, we understand this is the beginning of an even bigger battle.”

Additionally, Prof. Alvaré responded to the often-told lie that abortions are done to promote women’s health.

“Overall, serious pro-choice literature agrees women are slightly worse off after [abortion] … abortion does not respond to health conditions. It is a desire not to have that child in almost all cases,” Dr. Alvaré said.
