There isn’t a single thing that most parents wouldn’t do to protect their children. Sometimes, that includes making the nearly impossible decision to give them to someone else, who can better care for them.

This has been the case in Afghanistan over the past several days, where multiple videos have emerged of desperate parents surrendering their children to U.S. and British soldiers as the Taliban has taken over the country.

The Hamid Karzai International Airport in Afghanistan has been secured by thousands of U.S. troops to support ongoing evacuation from the country. However, not everyone is being allowed to flee – leaving some parents to face an almost impossible choice.

In one video, a man can be seen holding up a baby to a group of U.S. soldiers, one of whom grabs the baby and pulls it over the barbed wire fence.

“Toddler pulled over wall by U.S. soldiers as desperate crowds gather outside #Kabul airport,” Disclose.tv tweeted.

“UPDATE – The baby seen in the video was taken to a medical treatment facility at #Kabul airport and cared for by medical professionals,” Disclose.tv later tweeted, citing CBS.

In another video, a packed crowd is seen gathered outside the Kabul airport. Video shows the crowd passing a baby from person to person to get it to safety.

“People are so desperate to escape the #Taliban that they’re passing babies and kids forward to the gate at #Kabul airport,” Matt Zeller tweeted.

These incidents are heartbreaking and demonstrate just how bad conditions have deteriorated in Afghanistan.

The videos bring to mind the story of Moses, after Pharaoh commanded the Hebrew midwives to kill every son born to the Hebrews. In order to protect him, Moses’ mother gave him up.

“When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank” (Exodus 2:3 ESV).

Pharaoh’s daughter then adopted Moses and had his mother care for him while he was still an infant.

The parents of the children seen in these videos have likely made one of the most heartbreaking decisions they have ever had to make. Please pray for them and continue to pray for the people of Afghanistan and for the safety of U.S. troops who have been sent there.
