Republican House Members Introduce Bill to Stop Boys from Competing in Girls Sports

Member of the House of Representatives Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) has introduced a bill which would prohibit Title IX funds from financing women’s sports when biological males are allowed to compete against biological women. The bill is aptly called the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act (H.R.5603).
In a press release announcing the bill, Rep. Steube said, “With the House passage of H.R. 5 (The Equality Act) earlier this Congress, women and girls participating in competitive sports across the country are at risk of losing the equal playing field they were guaranteed by the Education Amendments of 1972. We must protect our female athletes from being forced to compete against biological male athletes in competitive sports.”
Rep. Steube appeared on Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight to support his bill. “It’s fascinating that we’re at this place in our country where you have to file bills to make it clear that women are actually going to be competing with women in women’s sports,” he said. Continuing his commonsense argument, Rep. Steube said, “We are completely eroding what women’s sports are if we can allow biological men to compete with women in women’s collegiate activities.”
Title IX was enacted in 1972 and was signed into law by President Richard Nixon. It led to an explosion of women’s participation in high school and college athletics. Now that biological males are competing in women’s athletics in many states around the country, Rep. Steube’s bill would amend Title IX to clarify that the word “sex” means “sex assigned at birth.”
Two other members of the House cosponsored the bill including Congressman Jim Hagedorn (R-MN) and Congresswoman Debbie Lesko (R-AZ). In a tweet, Rep. Lesko said, “Young women and girl athletes from across the country are losing games, even scholarships, to biological males who choose to identify as women and girls. That’s why I am an original cosponsor of Rep. Greg Steube’s bill which will help protect the future of women and girls’ sports.”
Rep. Hagedorn tweeted, “Proud to stand up for the integrity of women’s sports with my friends Rep. Greg Steube and Rep. Debbie Lesko by supporting the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. In my view, biological boys have no place competing in girls’ sports.”
In related news, the U.S. Department of Education is currently investigating a Connecticut policy which allows biological males to complete in girls high school sports. The Daily Citizen has previously informed you on this news. This specific policy has permitted 17 state championship titles that would have gone to women to be stolen by biological males.
Let’s hope that sometime in the near future, Congress finds the courage to protect women’s rights by defending girls sports.
