Republicans Must Defund Planned Parenthood This Year
Congressional Republicans must defund Planned Parenthood, our nation’s largest abortion provider, before losing control of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate in the 120th U.S. Congress, which begins on January 3, 2027.
Last year, Congress successfully defunded Planned Parenthood for the first time in history, denying the abortion mill roughly $850 million of taxpayer money.
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1), which President Trump signed into law on July 4, 2025, prohibited federal Medicaid dollars from flowing to abortion businesses. That provision expired after one year, on July 4, 2026.
The Senate passed H.R. 1 through the reconciliation process, a legislative tactic which allows a bill to pass with a simple majority vote (51) instead of the 60 votes usually required.
When Congress reconvenes next week, legislators will have limited time to enact additional legislation before the end of the year. Lawmakers are set to consider a funding bill to avert a government shutdown and the annual defense authorization bill.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson hopes to advance conservative priorities using a final reconciliation bill in the next few weeks. Congress can use the reconciliation process one more time this year to enact legislation.
“As we look at just the weeks ahead of us, we’re going to be ready to build on our record of accomplishment,” Speaker Johnson said at an event in Shreveport, Louisiana recently. “Our job is nowhere close to being finished yet, and the outcome of an election on one night doesn’t change that a bit.”
Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life of America, is urging Congress to defund Planned Parenthood immediately.
“Some Republicans are pushing for one last party-line reconciliation bill before they hand over the gavels as the current one expires on December 11th,” Hawkins wrote.
“A funding bill must be passed [before] the government shuts down in December. And a 10-year defund of Planned Parenthood must be in it.”
