Speaker of the House Mike Johnson recently sat down with Focus on the Family President Jim Daly for an interview to discuss his personal family story, his Christian faith, and the importance of civil engagement with political opponents.
In the interview, Speaker Johnson also spoke about how his parents courageously rejected abortion and chose to give him life.
“I’m a product of a teen pregnancy,” Speaker Johnson acknowledged.
My parents were, not high school sweethearts, but seventh grade sweethearts, and they dated from middle school on. And their junior year of high school, I was conceived. And it was almost exactly a year before Roe v. Wade [was decided on] January of ’72.
During the pregnancy, their friends said, “You know, you can go get that taken care of.” And my parents were both raised [in] nominal Catholic families, but they just knew somewhere deep in their heart that was not right. And thankfully, I was allowed to be born.
Speaker Johnson said that part of the reason he is passionate about defending preborn babies in the womb is because of his story.
“I’ve always been very deeply committed to the issue, the sanctity of human life, because it’s so real to us,” Speaker Johnson said.

Speaking of the 87,000 preborn babies that have been saved due to state pro-life laws that have been enacted across the country since the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision, Speaker Johnson reaffirmed the value of human life.
“Every single one of those children, their lives have inestimable dignity and value,” the speaker said.
Our declaration, our nation’s birth certificate, states that so clearly.
That’s what makes our nation different and distinct is that we boldly proclaim what we said was a self-evident truth, that all of us are created by God. That is the foundational premise. It’s in the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, and we abandon that premise at our peril.
