Gene Hackman’s Tragic Father Wound

According to police investigators, the death of 95-year-old actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa, remain a mystery.

The couple was found inside their Santa Fe, New Mexico home last week, though authorities believe they likely died upwards of nine days earlier. Carbon monoxide poisoning has been ruled out. Adding to the intrigue is the fact the couples, who are nearly 30 years apart age-wise, were found in separate rooms.

Known as “Hollywood’s Everyman,” Gene Hackman’s career spanned over 40 years and included such blockbuster films as The French Connection, Mississippi Burning, Superman and Hoosiers.

Born San Bernardino, California and raised in Danville, Illinois Hackman lied about his age to join the Marines. In an old interview clip that surfaced last week following his death, the versatile star talked about his early years with the late James Lipton on the show, “Inside the Actors Studio.”

Gene, who was 71 at the time, is asked how old he was when his father left him and the family.

It’s clear the question elicits emotion and a pause as Hackman gathers his voice to respond.

“About 13, I guess,” he answers. “It was tough.”

Lipton then goes on to allude to the heartless, cavalier way that Hackman’s dad abandoned the family.

“I was down the street, playing with some guys,” Gene acknowledged. “And he drove by and kind of waved…”

At that point, Gene Hackman was unable to keep talking as he fought back tears.

“Excuse me,” he tells Lipman. “It’s only been 65 years or so.”

“I hadn’t realized how much one small gesture can mean,” Hackman once said. “Maybe that’s why I became an actor.”

There’s no doubt that our pasts shape us, for good or bad. Hackman’s painful childhood propelled him to escape into the military. After he was discharged, he briefly studied journalism before going to New York to study television production. Acting came next.

Fathers come in all shapes and sizes, of course, but good dads have certain traits and characteristics in common.

Good fathers love and marry their children’s mother. This doesn’t mean heartbreaking things don’t happen, but every child is owed a mom and a dad.

The best fathers lead their families spiritually, knowing worship and time with a faith community on a weekend should be prioritized over travel ball. They pray with and for their children.

Fathers might not be the only source of income for their families, but assuming they’re able, they should be turning their gifts and talents into treasure that helps make the ends meet. They also demonstrate that time together is more important than toys.

Loving dads teach their children that good manners are worth more than millions of dollars, that listening is more important than talking, and that doing the right thing at the right time is nonnegotiable. They model the value and necessity of friends by having a few good ones.

Dads teach their children how to throw, bounce, kick, or hit a ball, change the oil, mow the lawn, chop wood, swim, ski, hunt, fish, ice skate, pitch a tent and ride a bike. They expose their children to a wider world by taking them there, whether on foot or by car, plane or train.

Exceptional fathers are concerned about protecting their sons’ and daughters’ hearts and minds. Good dads don’t watch filthy movies and expect their kids to remain clean. They encourage them to read by getting a library card and reading themselves. They realize values are more often caught than taught.

Good fathers aren’t perfect, but they admit when they’re wrong, and apologize for their mistakes. They’re always striving to improve.

The best dads are also optimistic, have a sense of purpose, reject cynicism and embrace sincerity. In the end, they know they won’t be around forever, so they make sure their children know how much they love them — and how being their father was a privilege and the best job of all.

Gene Hackman missed out on the blessing of a responsible father. He still went on to lead a productive life, but the emotions he expressed to James Lipton back in 2001 made clear that father wounds leave scars.

Of Course We Should Pray for the President

Former swimmer and women’s sports activist Riley Gaines ignited something of a social media firestorm on Sunday when she prayed for President Donald Trump and his cabinet at the opening of the EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix in Texas.

The tradition of praying at the start of NASCAR races dates to the sport’s beginning in 1948. But television viewers around the country would have first become aware of the practice in 1979 when CBS agreed to air the invocation. Response from viewers was overwhelmingly positive.

Riley Gaines’ invitation came just weeks after President Trump made headlines for attending the Daytona 500, his second visit to the track.

Here is how Gaines prayed:

Dear heavenly Father, we gather today with gratitude for your mercy that we do not deserve and the sacrifice of your son who was sent to Earth to conquer death, hell and the grave. We thank you for this day and the unity that brings us together as we prepare for the start of this race. Lord, we ask for your protection for all drivers, staff, families and fans alike. Grant each driver wisdom and safety at every turn.
Heavenly Father, bless President Donald J. Trump, his cabinet and all of our leaders that they may seek your guidance in all decisions. If this is done, we may never be wrong and America will be made great again. Instill in us humility and grace so that others will see you in our daily lives. May today and every day lead us to the ultimate finish line – meeting you at the pearly gates.
We surrender the activities of this day and of our lives into your mighty hands. God bless America, God bless the great state of Texas. In your name, we pray. Amen.

Scripture is clear in its call to pray for our leaders. Wrote the apostle Paul:

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth (1 Timothy 2:1-4).

Critics of Riley Gaines’ prayer suggested NASCAR was being turned into a Trump rally. Others were uncomfortable with the invocation simply mentioning the president at all.

NASCAR and political figures have long enjoyed an alliance. President Jimmy Carter hosted champion drivers at the White House in 1978. Back in 1984, President Ronald Reagan was the grand marshall of the Daytona Firecracker 400. George H.W. Bush visited the Daytona Speedway in 1992. Bill Clinton was grand marshall of the 1992 Southern 500.

Back in 2015, NASCAR’s Darrell Waltrip was the keynote speaker at the National Prayer Breakfast. Waltrip and President Obama greeted each other warmly. The legendary driver pulled no punches in his remarks. At one point during his keynote, the championship driver warned:

“If you don’t know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, if you don’t have a relationship, if He’s not the master of your life, if you’ve never gotten on your knees and asked Him to forgive you of your sins, or if you are just a pretty good guy or a pretty good gal, you’re going to go to hell.”

Opening prayers at NASCAR have made headlines over the years. Pastor Joe Nelms of the Family Baptist Church in Lebanon, Tenn., became water cooler fodder in 2011 when he prayed at the Nashville Superspeedway:

Heavenly father, we thank you tonight for all your blessings you sent and in all things we give thanks. So we want to thank you tonight for these mighty machines that you brought before us. Thank you for the Dodges and the Toyotas. Thank you for GM Performance Technology and R07 engines. Thank you for Sunoco racing fuel and Goodyear tires that bring performance and power to the track.
Lord, I want to thank you for my smokin’ hot wife tonight, Lisa, my two children, Eli and Emma – or, as we like to call them, the Little Es. I pray you bless the drivers and use them tonight. May they put on a performance worthy of this great track. In Jesus’s name, boogity boogity boogity, Amen.

While Pastor Nelms’ prayer went viral, some were understandably uncomfortable with the inclusion of several irreverent references.

Yet as Christians, we should feel free to pray for the burdens the Lord places on our hearts, and especially for our elected leaders regardless of political party.

On ‘Collegiate Day of Prayer’ Let’s Pray for Our College Students

Lots of prayers are being lifted up across college and university campuses today as part of the annual Collegiate Day of Prayer.

Beginning over two-hundred years ago, the last Thursday in February was set aside by every major school in America to pray not just for the students but also the institution itself.

After all, Harvard motto in 1650, “In Christi Gloriam” or “For the glory of Christ,” left no question about leadership’s spiritual convictions.

Writing about these campus prayer meetings and revivals, Henry C. Fish wrote:

In the year 1823, the last Thursday of February each year was agreed upon as the day for special supplication that God would pour from on high His Spirit upon our Colleges and Seminaries. And what have been some of the results? In the years 1824 and 1825, revivals were experienced in 5 different colleges; in 1826, in 6 colleges; in 1831 … In one of the colleges it is stated that a revival started on the very day of the concert of prayer. In 1835, not less than 18 revivals were reported by different colleges.

Prayer and spiritual awakenings have been reported at numerous college campuses over the past few years. Many will remember extended time of prayer at Kentucky’s Asbury University in 2023. Other mass prayer events have taken place at the University of Arkansas, Ohio State, Auburn, University of Georgia, and Texas A&M. Thousands of students have come to Christ and been baptized.

A group called “Unite Us” has helped to spearhead many of these prayer events on college campuses.

“Gen Z is hungry for the very things the empty, desiccated temples of secularism, consumerism, and global digital media cannot provide, but which Jesus can,” says Kyle Richter of Unite Us.

The organization has scheduled prayer time this spring at Purdue, University of Kentucky, Georgetown, West Virginia and Southern Methodist University.

All of this stands in stark contrast to the “party hardy” reputation some other colleges possess. Each year the Wall Street Journal comes out with a list. In September, Tulane and the University of Dayton were ranked at the top for party atmosphere.

According to organizers of this year’s outreach, 4,420 colleges have been adopted, meaning that prayer warriors are specifically lifting up teachers, students, and administrators at those particular institutions. The good and bad news is that there are still over 25,000 schools waiting for prayer.

Prayer is a powerful privilege for Christians, an opportunity to speak intimately with our Lord. Intercessory prayer for college students is desperately needed, especially as the evil and confusion cascade across campuses everywhere.

“Prayer is the highest activity of the human soul, and therefore it is at the same time the ultimate test of a man’s true spiritual condition,” preached Dr. David Martyn Lloyd-Jones. “There is nothing that tells the truth about us, so much as our prayer life.”

Please join us in praying for America’s colleges and its students.

Toxic Girl Scout Cookies, Toxic Girl Scout Organization?

Rumors of a Girl Scout Cookie recall have been flooding the internet this past month, undoubtedly fueled by social media sites like Tik Tok featuring tens of millions of posts suggesting Thin Mints and Samoas are toxic.

It seems the controversy was triggered when the results of a study examining 25 cookies revealed trace levels of glyphosate and heavy metals.

As the story escalated, Girl Scout officials released a statement declaring their cookies “safe to consume” and assuring the public their “bakers have confirmed that the levels reported do not pose a food safety concern to our customers.” They explained how trace amounts of both metals and glyphosate in soil where some of the cookie ingredients come from can result in trace amounts in the product itself.

An elevated interest in what’s inside the cookies is understandable, especially as more and more parents examine what their children are eating. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has pledged to root out unhealthy, unnecessary and downright dangerous ingredients in food.

Girl Scouts seem everywhere this time of year, whether walking and ringing doorbells in the neighborhood or standing outside the local supermarket. Buying their cookies might be a longstanding tradition for many.  For others, passing them up may be an increasingly common habit as the organization at-large has tilted to the ideological left over the years.

As such, claims of toxic cookies, whether exaggerated or not, may not be mother’s and father’s greatest concern when it comes to the Girl Scouts. Instead, it’s the ideological shift of a once highly respected organization.

In fact, as charges that the Girl Scouts have “gone woke” over the years have escalated, many parents have recalled the organization itself, deeming the group irreparably toxic and unfit for their daughter’s consumption.

This is why American Heritage Girls (AHG) has risen in popularity. It’s a wonderful Christian alternative, a ministry that helps to build young women’s faith in Jesus Christ. Founded by Patti Garibay in 1995, AHG is unapologetically Christ-centered, and was created after the GSUSA no longer required girls to make a pledge to God.

To be sure, unease with the Girl Scouts predates their 1993 vote omitting “God” from their pledge. It was back in the 1970s when progressive sex-ed programs became part of some troops’ culture. More recently, the organization has embraced the need to root out supposed systemic racism. In 2020, the organization tweeted congratulations to then Judge Amy Coney Barrett for becoming the fifth woman appointed to the Supreme Court. But within hours, the tweet was gone.

In recent years, the Girl Scouts have worked overtime to stop the proverbial bleeding of members and reputation by playing down their progressivism. But if you go to their website, you’ll find some questions and answers that communicate a whole lot by what they do and don’t say.

Here are some examples:

Q: What is Girl Scouts of the USA’s position regarding human sexuality, birth control and abortion?

A:  Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) does not take a position or develop materials on these issues. We feel our role is to help girls develop self-confidence and good decision-making skills that will help them make wise choices in all areas of their lives.

Translation: We don’t want to weigh in on fundamental matters of morality such as human sexuality and matters of life and death. We refuse to denounce the abortion genocide that is claiming millions of innocent lives – half of which are potential future Girl Scouts.

Q: How does Girl Scouts’ position on serving transgender youth apply to situations involving camping or volunteers?

A: These situations are rare and are considered individually with the best interests of all families in mind. Should any girl requiring special accommodations wish to camp, GSUSA recommends that the local council makes similar accommodation that schools across the country follow in regard to changing, sleeping arrangements, and other travel-related activities. With respect to volunteers, Girl Scouts welcomes both male and female adult volunteers and has developed appropriate safeguards regarding roles and responsibilities to ensure that girls receive the proper supervision and support.

Translation: We’re going to be very vague here, but also potentially defer to radical leftists in the public schools.

Q: What is Girl Scouts’ position on serving transgender youth?

A: Girl Scouts is proud to be the premiere leadership organization for girls in the country. Placement of transgender youth is handled on a case-by-case basis, with the welfare and best interests of the child and the members of the troop/group in question a top priority. That said, if the child is recognized by the family and school/community as a girl and lives culturally as a girl, then Girl Scouts is an organization that can serve her in a setting that is both emotionally and physically safe.

Translation: We promise to support and enable the lie that boys who claim to be girls are girls. We’re more interested in avoiding claims of so-called “transphobia” then we are with protecting the safety of girls.

Juliette Gordon Low, founder of the Girl Scouts, once observed that “Leadership is not about being in charge, but about taking care of those in your charge.” Tragically, many parents have fled the organization over the years over concerns that’s not been happening.

Like it or not, that’s how the (Girl Scout) cookie has crumbled.

First White House Cabinet Meeting Opens in Prayer

On Wednesday, President Donald J. Trump invited Scott Turner, the 19th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), to open the cabinet meeting of his second administration in prayer.

A former pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, Texas, Secretary Turner was also a nine-season player in the National Football League. Prior to joining the new administration, Turner worked with a firm committed to developing multi-family housing.  He also served as a representative in the Texas State Legislature.

With a capacity crowd jammed into the White House Cabinet Room, President Trump invited Secretary Turner to pray. Here was how he addressed the Lord as he stood behind a seated President Trump,

Father, we thank you for this awesome privilege, to be in your presence. We thank you you’ve allowed us to see this day. The Bible says your mercies are new every morning, and Father God we give you the glory and honor. Thank you, God, for President Trump, for appointing us, for anointing us to do this job.
Father, we pray you’ll give the president and the vice president wisdom as they lead. Father, I pray for all my colleagues around this table and in this room.
Lord God, we pray that we would lead with a righteous clarity. Father God, as we serve the people of this country in every prospecticve agency, every job that we have, we would humble ourselves before you, and we would lead in a manner that you’ve called us to lead and to serve.
The Bible says “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.” But Father, we today honor you, and in your rightful place, Father, thank you for giving us this opportunity to restore faith in this country and be a blessing to the people of America.
And Lord God, today in our meeting, we pray that you would be glorified in our conversation.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Social media sites lit up with positive reaction with many calling the prayer a dose of “fresh air” and a recognition of our inability to do anything outside of God’s authority.

President John Adams was only in the newly constructed White House for one night when he wrote to his wife, Abigail:

“I pray Heaven to bestow the best of blessings on this House, and all that shall hereafter inhabit.”

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt had that phrase carved into a White House fireplace mantle.

The tradition of opening government functions in prayer dates to the Republic’s beginning. A chaplain was first appointed in 1774 to open both the Senate and House in prayer.

Critics of such public prayers mistakenly suggest the practice is unconstitutional but just saying something doesn’t make it so. Over the years, the Supreme Court has upheld public prayer (Marsh v. Chambers in 1983, Town of Greece v. Galloway in 2014, and Kennedy v. Bremerton School District in 2022,

Writing for the majority in 2002 in a case involving football coach Joe Kennedy praying on the 50-yard line, Justice Gorsuch rightly declared:

Respect for religious expressions is indispensable to life in a free and diverse Republic. Here, a government entity sought to punish an individual for engaging in a personal religious observance, based on a mistaken view that it has a duty to suppress religious observances even as it allows comparable secular speech. The Constitution neither mandates nor tolerates that kind of discrimination.

But Secretary Turner’s prayer wasn’t just constitutional, but also eloquent, elegant, personal and practical. May the Lord be merciful and answer such prayers.
