‘World’s Largest Online VBS’ Hopes to Reach One Million Children with Message of God’s Love, Hope and Help
In January, Christian illusionist and evangelist Scott Humston set a goal for 2020. He hoped to proclaim Christ to 100,000 people, through both live and online events.
Then, COVID-19 hit, with shutdowns and event cancelations. Humston was at a loss about how to continue his ministry of reaching children and families with the gospel. Then he connected with Steve Pennington, director of FaithKidz Ministries and children’s pastor at Trevecca Community Church in Nashville.
Out of that conversation came “WOW VBS” – a “Virtual Bible Spectacular,” and a new goal of reaching one million kids and 10,000 churches around the world. Humston says, “In a scary, uncertain time when our children need some laughter and fun in their lives, we are also mindful that our kids also need to hear the Good News that can change their lives forever.”
WOW VBS is a free event for children, families and churches, featuring interactive worship, Bible lessons, magicians, puppets, ventriloquists, comedians, games and crafts. The 30- to 40-minute programs will stream for four days, June 22-25 and replaying from June 29-July 2.
The producers recently announced that comedian and author Chonda Pierce was just added to the lineup. Pierce has been a guest on Focus on the Family’s Broadcast. Another Focus Broadcast guest, Jean Thomason, will also be featured. Thomason is the author of Sharing God’s Big Love with Little Lives and performs as the musical children’s character “Miss Pattycake.”
The event has performers from around the world, including bilingual ventriloquist Yoly Pacheco, Christian entertainers and illusionists David and Teesha Laflin, songwriter and children’s worship leader Simon Parry, and children’s music artist and entertainer Dan Warlow.
WOW VBS has downloadable resources for parents and churches, including promotional videos and flyers, lesson guides, game activities, coloring pages and craft videos. Bible stories about Peter, Lazarus, the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son will teach children about God giving us courage, hope, help and love.
For parents and churches wanting to provide teaching and worship for children, even while cities and states have restrictions on in-person gatherings, WOW VBS is a great resource.
