House Passes Resolution Honoring ‘Life and Legacy’ of Charlie Kirk

The U.S. House of Representatives on Friday overwhelming approved a resolution honoring the “life and legacy” of Charlie Kirk.

The resolution, which passed 310-58, describes Kirk as a “courageous American patriot” and “devoted Christian, who boldly lived out his faith with conviction, courage, and compassion.”

He was “a dedicated husband to his beloved wife, Erika Kirk, and a loving father to their daughter and son, exemplifying the virtues of faith, fidelity, and fatherhood,” and “a fierce defender of the American founding and its timeless principles of life, liberty, limited government, and individual responsibility,” the resolution states.

All present Republican congressmen voted in favor of the resolution, along with 95 Democrat members. Fifty-eight Democrat members voted “no,” another 38 voted “present,” and 22 didn’t vote at all.

Before the vote, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson spoke on the House floor encouraging unanimous support for the resolution.

“By voting for this resolution, we’re making a strong statement on behalf of the Congress,” Speaker Johnson said.

“We’re telling our constituents, for one thing, that political violence, but also the glorification and celebration of that violence, are profoundly wrong, and that goes against everything we stand for as Americans.”

He added,

Charlie stood for exactly the opposite. He stood for what was good in America, what is virtuous, worthy of protection and preservation, and we honor his memory by doing this simple act of passing this resolution.
I can’t imagine that anyone would vote against it or vote present or pretend as though this is not exactly the right thing to do.

You can watch the speaker’s full remarks below:

By passing the resolution, the House of Representatives:

  1. Condemns in the strongest possible terms the assassination of Charles “Charlie” James Kirk, and all forms of political violence.
  2. Commends and honors the dedicated law enforcement and emergency personnel for their tireless efforts in finding the suspect responsible for the assassination of Charlie Kirk and urges the administration of swift justice to the suspect.
  3. Extends its deepest condolences and sympathies to Charlie Kirk’s family, including his wife, Erika, and their two young children, and prays for comfort, peace, and healing in this time of unspeakable loss.
  4. Honors the life, leadership, and legacy of Charlie Kirk, whose steadfast dedication to the Constitution, civil discourse, and Biblical truth inspired a generation to cherish and defend the blessings of liberty.
  5. Calls upon all Americans – regardless of race, party affiliation, or creed – to reject political violence, recommit to respectful debate, uphold American values, and respect one another as fellow Americans.

The resolution can be considered a formal statement from the House. It doesn’t change U.S. law.

The U.S. Senate approved a similar, though shorter, resolution earlier this week by unanimous consent.
