Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed the Parental Rights in Education bill into law, reinforcing the fundamental right of parents to direct the care, education and upbringing of their children. That’s good news for parents in The Sunshine State.
The new law, falsely dubbed “Don’t Say Gay” by LGBT activists and their allies, keeps teachers from inappropriately sexualizing children and mandates that schools tell parents if their children are struggling with physical, mental or emotional issues, such as internal conflicts about sexual identity.
Florida Family Policy Council (FFPC) President John Stemberger released a statement that said:
We applaud with a standing ovation Governor DeSantis’s firm stand for parental rights and for protecting children. The Governor was a solid rock as he fought for first principles of good government. He did not budge an inch in the face of the lies and false narratives being perpetuated by the media and small group of radicals. …
Little elementary school kids do not need to be introduced to transgenderism and other radical views of human sexuality that parents find harmful and are not in their children’s best interest.
The governor signed HB 1557 at a press conference at Classical Preparatory School, in Spring Hill, Florida, saying:
As many of you know, the last couple of years have really revealed to parents that they are being increasingly ignored across our country when it comes to education.
We have seen curriculum imbedded, for very, very young children, classroom materials about sexuality and woke gender ideology. We’ve seen libraries that have clearly inappropriate pornographic materials, for very young kids, and we’ve seen services, that were given to students without the consent or even knowledge of their parents, across the country. And unfortunately, that’s happened here in the state in Florida.
In Florida, we’ve found at least six school districts in the state that had policies to cut parents out of the decisions regarding their child’s well-being and to shield them from knowing about various forms of mental health services.
At the signing, DeSantis showed the infamous “Genderbread Person” and a “transgender” picture book, both of which are used in early elementary grades to indoctrinate children into gender ideology and sexual identity confusion. He said, “This is part of a national trend to cut parents out of their child’s education.”
Florida is clearly pushing back against LGBT activists, Hollywood celebrities and corporate media who labeled the bill, “Don’t Say Gay” and seek to sexualize and confuse children.
The state is working hard to protect parental rights. On March 25th legislation was signed mandating curriculum transparency in education and limiting school board membership to a maximum of 12 consecutive years.
Last June, Florida passed a Parents’ Bill of Rights, which affirmed parental rights in health care and education and provided penalties for hospitals, health care practitioners and educators that violated those rights.
