Pam Bondi Pledges to End ‘Partisan Weaponization’ of Department of Justice

Pam Bondi, President-elect Donald J. Trump’s nominee for attorney general, appeared before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday for the first day of her confirmation hearing.

Bondi will appear before the committee for day two of her hearing at 10:15 a.m. ET on Thursday, January 16.

The 59-year-old Florida native earned her J.D. from the Stetson University College of Law in 1990. She served for 18 years as a prosecutor before being elected Florida’s attorney general in 2011, where she served until 2019.

If confirmed, Bondi will take over for Attorney General Merrick Garland as our nation’s chief law enforcement officer.

Bondi pledged in her opening statement before the committee to “return the Department of Justice to its core mission of keeping Americans safe and vigorously enforcing the law.”

She added,

That requires getting back to basics – prosecuting violent crime and gang activity, stopping child predators and drug traffickers, protecting our nation from terrorists and other foreign threats, and addressing the overwhelming crisis at the border.
The Department of Justice must also return to defending the foundational rights of all Americans, including free speech, free exercise of religion, and the right to bear arms.

Bondi also pledged to “restore confidence and integrity to the Department of Justice – and each of its components,” adding, “Under my watch, the partisan weaponization of the Department of Justice will end. America must have one tier of justice for all.”

You can watch a brief clip of her opening statement below:

Under the Biden administration, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) used the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act to target and jail pro-life supporters, while ignoring hundreds of attacks on churches and pregnancy resource centers.

In fact, over the past four years the Biden administration brought 24 FACE Act cases against 55 defendants – only two of those cases concerned attacks on pregnancy resource centers; no case was opened to defend a church despite hundreds of attacks.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar asked Bondi whether she will uphold the FACE Act.

“Senator, the FACE Act not only protects abortion clinics, but it also protects pregnancy centers and people going for counseling,” Bondi replied. “The law should be applied even handedly.”

Additionally, Bondi was asked by Sen. Mike Lee about how she will prevent the weaponization of the DOJ if she is confirmed.

“Going after parents at your school board meeting has got to stop,” Bondi replied. “For practicing your religion, sending informants in to Catholic Churches must stop.”

After Bondi’s hearing concludes, the Judiciary Committee will vote on whether to recommend Bondi for the position. If she receives a favorable recommendation, she’ll need a simple majority vote in the Senate to become the 87th United States attorney general.
