Scottie Scheffler’s Son, Bennett, Steals Show After Dad’s Big Win

Scottie Scheffler, the number one golfer in the world, took home the Claret Jug after winning the British Open on Sunday. The 29-year-old finished 17 under, besting second-place Harris English by four strokes.

During the awards ceremony, however, it was Scheffler’s 1-year-old son, Bennett, who stole the show.

As Scheffler received the trophy, Bennett caught sight of his dad and ran toward him. But he didn’t make it very far before falling to the ground.

“No!” the announcer yelled, watching Bennett’s tumble.

Scheffler smiled and put down his trophy, waving for Bennett to come towards him.

With a little help from a golf official, Bennett got back to his feet, with the crowd cheering, just before Scheffler scooped him up and placed him next to the Claret Jug.

“Have a feeling Bennet’s going to grow up with a lot of hardware around him,” the announcer surmised.

NCB Sports shared the adorable moment on X, which you can watch below:

In his post-victory press conference, Scheffler acknowledged that while he loves winning tournaments, golf is not the most important part of his life.

“My greatest priorities are my faith and my family. You know, those come first for me. Golf is third, in that order,” Sheffler shared.

He added,

Golf is not how I identify myself. I don’t identify myself by winning tournaments, chasing trophies, or being famous. …
Like I said, my faith and my family are what’s most important to me. And I try to live as normal of a life as possible because I feel like a normal guy.

Earlier in the tournament, Scheffler reflected on the game of golf, and why he doesn’t find it ultimately fulfilling.

“Family is my priority,” Scheffler shared. “I would much rather be a great father than I would be a great golfer. At the end of the day, that’s what more important to me.”

You can watch his remarks below:

Scheffler’s focus on his faith and family serves as an important lesson – especially for young people today.

According to a 2023 survey by Pew Research Center, most Americans say having a job or career they enjoy (71%) and having close friends (61%) is more important to them for living a fulfilling life than having children (26%) and being married (23%).

The priority that many young adults place on career development and education – compared to family formation – is one of the reasons that 25% of 40-year-olds in the United States today have never been married. This is compared to 20% in 2010 and just 6% in 1980.

Dr. Brad Wilcox, Professor of Sociology and Director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia, previously told the Daily Citizen in an interview, “My colleague Lyman Stone has projected that about 1 in 3 young adults today will not marry by age 40.”

“And probably few will marry beyond that stage,” he added, “So, it’s a large share of young adults today.”

Yet, study after study has shown that the happiest people around are married mothers and fathers. Indeed, married fathers are more than twice as likely to report being “very happy” compared to their unmarried childless peers.

The Daily Citizen congratulates Scottie Scheffler on his fourth major win. But even more importantly, Scheffler deserves commendation for knowing and bearing witness to life’s most important priorities.
