VP Vance: ‘The Most Important Truth’ Charlie Kirk Told is Jesus is Lord

Vice President JD Vance hosted an episode of “The Charlie Kirk Show” on Monday, filling in for Charlie, 31, who was assassinated on September 10.

The Vice President’s Remarks

The vice president discussed his friendship with Charlie and his reaction to many on the Left cheering Charlie’s assassination. He also revealed details about him and his wife Usha’s conversation with Erika, Charlie’s widow, shortly after her husband’s death, and how the interaction challenged him to be a better father.

In his closing monologue, Vice President Vance shared that many Democrat lawmakers and former Senate colleagues had reached out to him following the assassination to offer their condolences.

The vice president said he was “desperate” to unite with anyone willing to condemn political violence and the ideas that cause it. He then quoted Psalm 133, which reads,

“Behold, how good and pleasant it is
    when brothers dwell in unity!
It is like the precious oil on the head”
(Psalm 133: 1-2, ESV).

“Oh, how badly have I craved that precious ointment in recent days,” the vice president said. “But first, we must tell the truth.”

“It’s the only way to honor Charlie,” Vance stressed. “For what was he, if not a man who told the truth in every place, in every environment?”

“The most important truth Charlie told is this,” the vice president continued, before reciting a portion of the Nicene Creed with his voice breaking again:

[That long ago a man] begotten, not made, came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit, was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake, He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, and suffered death, and was buried, and rose again on the third day.

“Charlie believed, as I do, that all the truth he told flowed from that fundamental principle,” Vance shared. “Real unity can be found only after climbing the mountain of truth.”

Three Lessons for Christians

Millions of individuals have been shocked, horrified and moved to tears at the news of Charlie’s assassination. He was a husband and father to two young children who was killed for his faith, his political beliefs and his willingness to engage others in dialogue – especially those who disagreed with him.

Charlie was assassinated under a Turning Point USA tent with the bolded words, “PROVE ME WRONG,” inviting discussion and debate. He was killed while exercising his First Amendment right to free speech and encouraging others to do the same.

There are many lessons to be learned in the wake of Charlie’s assassination. Here’s three important truths Christians should take away from the horrific event.

First, we cannot be afraid to speak truth – especially in places, and on issues, that need it most. In some ways, Charlie was more willing to evangelize the lost – by intentionally going to college campuses – than some pastors. Most people, thankfully, are willing to listen and learn.

Second, we must acknowledge that not everyone is willing to engage in good faith discussions. There is real evil in the world, and there are evil people who have no interest in finding common ground or having a conversation. This is true both of Charlie Kirk’s assassin, and the 26% of those aged 18 to 34 who, in a recent poll, said they believe America is “better off” after Charlie was killed.

Jesus encouraged his disciples, “If anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town” (Matthew 10:14, ESV). He also taught, “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you” (John 15: 18, ESV).

Finally, real truth can only be found through Jesus Christ, who said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6, ESV).

All attempts to find truth and unity without Jesus Christ – the source of truth, grace and mercy – will ultimately fall short.

Perhaps that’s why Charlie spoke so often about his faith, writing on Twitter, “Jesus is the answer.” He is indeed.

Charlie Kirk was the best of us. Now, we must honor his legacy.
