According to recent news reports, the Biden administration is looking for ways to ensure that minor pregnant illegal immigrants can receive federally funded abortions.
The move comes after the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade.
Reuters has reported that “Biden officials are exploring ways to provide abortion access for pregnant women and girls in U.S. immigration custody in states with bans.”
Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) recently confirmed to CNN that following the Dobbs decision, the agency “will continue to comply with federal law and abide by current detention standards which ensure that pregnant detainees in custody have access to pregnancy services.”
These services include “routine and/or specialized prenatal care, pregnancy testing, comprehensive counseling and assistance, postpartum follow up, lactation services and abortion services” (emphasis added).
Last month, 22 pro-life Congressmen authored a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra demanding the Biden administration stop transporting illegal immigrants to receive abortions.
“Your departments must immediately cease transporting illegal aliens to have abortions,” the lawmakers wrote to the two Cabinet officials.
“Abortion is not health care: it kills unborn children and harms their mothers. Federal taxpayer dollars should not be used to transport illegal aliens for abortions or otherwise facilitate abortions,” the lawmakers wrote.
There’s a tragic irony playing out in the current administration’s policy.
On the one hand, the Left generally likes to claim that it’s compassionate to encourage, or at the very least, not prohibit, illegal immigration.
When a pregnant illegal immigrant gives birth to a child in the U.S., that child is automatically given citizenship. This is known as Birthright Citizenship.
And yet, that very same child who would be given all the rights and privileges associated with becoming a citizen of the United States, the Left also wants to “ensure” can be aborted.
We conclude with a brief quote from the authors of the aforementioned letter, who wrote:
“Using federal resources to transport minors across state lines for abortions or otherwise providing or facilitating abortions for illegal aliens in DHS or HHS custody is unacceptable and must be stopped.”
