A school district in Wisconsin has refused to rescind controversial sexual education curriculum that parents had banded together to oppose.
On August 22, the Wauwatosa School Board, in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, met and approved a sex education curriculum that parents say is inappropriate and problematic for schools to teach. The board approved the curriculum in a vote of 6-1 after four hours of comments from parents during a public comment period.
Students will start to learn sex ed with a course that starts in kindergarten as a part of the district’s Human Growth and Development Curriculum.
The courses for kindergarten have young children learning about “Gender Identity & Expression” and require them to “understand gender role stereotypes and define gender.” Resources for kindergarteners include indoctrination material like the books Sparkle Boy and Not all Princesses Dress in Pink.
Other portions of the content for kindergarteners include the topics “Consent and Healthy Relationships” and “Anatomy and Physiology” where young children must be able to “correctly identify at least 3 body parts of a female” and “describe why it is important for them to know the correct names for genitals.”
Under the curriculum, third graders are required to “define gender, gender identity and gender role stereotypes” and “understand the use of pronouns around gender identity.”
Third graders must also be able to “recognize differences exist between sex assigned at birth and gender identity,” “define gender identity and understand the use of pronouns around gender identity,” “define sexual orientation” and “understand the difference between sexual orientation and gender identity.”
By fourth grade, young students must “have awareness of different definitions for gender, including transgender, cisgender, and non-binary” and “understand that individuals may identify beyond male and female.” Recommended reading for fourth graders includes the book It Feels Good to Be Yourself: A Book About Gender Identity.
By fifth grade, students should be well enough indoctrinated that they can “explain that gender expression and gender identity exist along a spectrum.”
Then by eighth grade, schools should have turned their students into good enough LGBT-activists that they can “explain what they, as students, can do to improve the school environment around LGBTQ inclusion.”
Eighth graders should be able to “define sexual identity and explain a range of identities related to sexual orientation (e.g., heterosexual, bisexual, lesbian, gay, queer, twospirit, asexual, pansexual.”
On September 27, the school board met again to consider rescinding the curriculum. The only board member who opposes the curriculum, Michael Meier, voted against the content originally and proposed its rescission.
However, no other board member seconded the motion for the curriculum to be rescinded.
Several parents spoke with WISN 12 News, expressing disagreement with the curriculum.
One parent, Paul Bruno, said, “You’re asking teachers who teach math and science to then address really deep emotional issues and I think that’s a place that they don’t belong,”
It’s increasingly important for parents to be intensely involved in their children’s education. Parents must be aware of what their children are learning in school.
