You’re Not a Monkey’s Uncle

A myth repeated so often in museums, textbooks, and nature documentaries that most people accept it as dogma is that humans and chimpanzees share 98% to 99% of our DNA. The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., for example, cites this statistic in its Human Origins exhibit as confirmation that “modern humans and chimpanzees diverged from a common ancestor between 8 and 6 million years ago.”

The only problem is the statistic is wrong, likely by an order of magnitude. Even more, the science community has known that it is wrong for a while now, and new methods of comparing the genomes of humans and great apes show just how genetically different the two are. In fact, the cited 1% to 2% difference hasn’t really been defensible in years.

As far back as 2007, authors in the journal Science called on fellow researchers to retire “the myth of 1%.” Geologist Casey Luskin explained, in a 2023 ID the Future podcast, that the estimate was derived decades ago from a single protein-to-protein comparison before the chimp genome was even fully sequenced. Since then, genetic science has become far more precise, and almost no modern comparisons between human and chimp genomes yield the famous 98% to 99% statistic.

More precise methods for comparing genomes show the actual difference between humans and chimps to be far higher than what is constantly being quoted. In April, a “groundbreaking” paper published in Nature gives the complete sequences of various ape genomes not compiled using the human genome as a guide. As Evolution News put it, this data reveals that “humans and chimps differ by at least 14[%], a major revision of the old statistic.” Luskin, an associate director at the Center for Science and Culture, had to break this “bombshell story” because the comparison was—for some strange reason—“buried deep in the 174-page-long Supplementary Data” of the paper.

The authors derived the new figure by using a method called “Progressive Cactus alignment,” which allowed them to compare human and ape genomes directly across their entire length. Which parts of the genome they compared affected the number of differences. As Luskin wrote, “only 84.95[%] of the nucleotides in the chimp genome had an identical 1:1 correspondence with the human genome,” yielding a haploid genomic difference of just over 15%.

The diploid alignment was even more dramatically divergent, showing a difference of 16.11% between humans and chimps. When sex chromosomes were analyzed, chimpanzee X chromosomes were over 20% different from ours, and Y chromosomes were an astonishing 95.68% different!

In an open letter to the Smithsonian, Luskin highlighted the research and urged them to correct the now debunked statistic in the Human Evolution exhibit. The number cited, he wrote, is “no longer scientifically accurate,” and “leaves the average reader with the false impression that there is only 1.2[%] genetic difference between modern humans and chimpanzees.” Given recent findings, the Smithsonian and other museums have “no business” claiming that DNA evidence strongly supports common ancestry. No word yet on when the museum plans to correct the exhibit.

Far from being “settled science,” the idea that humans are nearly genetically identical to apes is what author Jonathan Wells has called an “icon of evolution.” These are images or concepts fixed in the public imagination which bias them toward Darwinian explanations, even long after science has moved on. It might also be called a zombie idea, which should be dead but keeps moving around and causing problems.

Even more important, the assumption that genetic resemblance between humans and animals means we must be evolved animals depends on genetic reductionism. This idea that we are merely the sum of our genes is itself a matter of materialistic faith and misinterprets the substantive evidence for design in the human body. No matter the degree of genetic similarity, there remains, as Luskin put it, “a vast cognitive and behavioral gulf” between humans and apes. Humans write scientific papers about chimpanzees, not the other way around! Humans compose music, create art, build cathedrals, use complex technology, are religious, and write symphonies.

Besides, any biological similarity between humans and apes can just as easily be explained as the mark of common design. Every engineer knows that a good blueprint can be reused and repurposed. We should expect living things to share similarities if they share a design and an infinitely wise and creative Designer.

It’s time this icon is retired. It’s time this zombie is killed. Repeating that something is “settled science” does not make it or its materialistic conclusions so.

That Bible Verse is not About Immigration

Recently on X, the Department of Homeland Security posted a video that featured immigration enforcement officers riding in Black Hawk helicopters and toting rifles to a cover of Johnny Cash’s song “God’s Gonna Cut You Down.” A narrator quoted Isaiah 6:8: “Here am I, send me.”

Democratic Congressman Hakeem Jeffries utilized a similar hermeneutic a few days later. Quoting from the Gospel of Matthew during a record-breaking speech to delay the passing of President Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill,” he said,

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me in. I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. “

According to Jeffries, this passage applies to government assistance programs. “It’s not just in [U.S.] law, it’s right here in Matthew,” he said.

As Christian statistician Ryan Burge pointed out in a post on X, “there’s been empirical work” demonstrating how both the Right and the Left “emphasize Bible verses that [reinforce] their own political perspectives,” while conveniently ignoring the context of those verses.

Selective proof-texting points to how widespread and deep biblical illiteracy is. In addition to an ignorance of the actual content of the Bible, there is ignorance about what the Bible even is, and how Christians throughout the ages have used it. It’s bad when this ignorance shows up in politics. It’s sad when it shows up in our churches and Christian subcultures.

Who hasn’t seen a “verse of the day” calendar that overlays a singular motivational Bible quote on a field of flowers or a sunset? Before the DHS misused Isaiah 6:8, thousands of church conferences and short-term mission trips have, with “Here am I, send me” printed on banners and t-shirts. Often missing is Isaiah’s near-death experience and repentance beforehand, not to mention what God actually sent Isaiah to do (basically, fail as a prophet until he was eventually sawn in half).

Christian publishing, much of Christian music, and maybe the majority of Bible studies are afflicted with this same bad habit. Christian bookstores are full of “Bible promise” titles filled with de-contextualized verses meant to directly apply to the reader. But how many books of Bible curses are there, though the Bible includes those, too? How many Americans, in the habit of “verse plucking,” gladly claim Deuteronomy 28’s national blessings, but don’t read on about the national curses for disobedience that directly follow? How many Bible studies ask the question, “What does this verse mean to you” before truly wrestling with, “What does this verse mean?”

For years, I led a session for Christian school leaders entitled “How (Not) to Read the Bible.” But of course, the point isn’t to take the Bible out of anyone’s hands. Rather, it is to help us know and understand this essential way that God has made Himself known. Rather than treat Scripture as a fortune cookie, we have what Peter called, “the prophetic word more fully confirmed.” More confirmed than what? Astonishingly, Peter wrote that the Word of God is more sure than his own experience with Christ on the Mount of Transfiguration.

A simple, effective way to understand Scripture is to ask where the verse in question fits, within the chapter, the book, the testament, and redemptive history as a whole. Who was speaking, and why? For example, best not to quote an observation about God or life out of the middle of Job, when his friends give “darken[ing] counsel by words without knowledge.” Answering these questions always requires reading more than a single verse.

Also, we should always ask where a passage fits within the four-act drama of the whole Story of Scripture. Seeing the Bible’s larger movements from Creation to Fall to Redemption to Restoration de-centers ourselves and our stories from the text and re-centers God and His story. This will also require reading the Bible not in isolation from other Christians or from Christian history. God’s Word, like the Christian faith it reveals, is personal, but as Peter goes on to say, it is not private. The Bible tells the story of God and His creation, so we must ask, “Where do I fit into it?” rather than “Where does it fit into my life?”

None of this means the Bible ought not be personally applied or, for that matter, brought into policy discussions. Rightly understood, the Bible speaks to all of life. We must be careful to bring the Word of God to our discussions, rather than our opinions masqueraded as a Bible verse. After all, unlike our political class and inspirational calendars, God has not revealed Himself in soundbites.

NY AG Weaponizes Office to Target Conservative Family Policy Council

Jason McGuire, executive director of New York Families Foundation and New York Families Action, will be spending the next eight weekends in the Livingston County Jail after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges related to campaign finance reporting errors.

The errors were not connected with McGuire’s work at the two pro-life, pro-family organizations and totaled $1,283.76 in expenditures that were missing receipts.

You heard that right: Missing. Receipts.

For that bookkeeping mistake, he’s spending eight weekends in jail.

McGuire and the board of directors of the two pro-life, pro-family organizations allege that New York Attorney General Letitia James exploited her position to harass them in a “politically motivated attack.”

Board Chairman Reverend Emelio Sebastian emphatically decried the NY attorney general’s action:

The Board of Directors of New York Families Foundation (NYFF) is outraged and grieved at the results of the recent legal proceedings involving our executive director, Jason McGuire.

We believe that New York State Attorney General Letitia James and her staff abused the legal system for partisan and ideological reasons by investigating Jason in the first place.

Rev. Sebastian explained that McGuire pled guilty to the two misdemeanors “for the purpose of making a time-consuming, onerous, and expensive legal problem go away,” adding:

“Based on Jason’s long tenure with our organization, his character, and his integrity, we are confident that Jason did not engage in any intentional wrongdoing. … As a result of Letitia James’ lawfare, Jason will serve as a political prisoner.”

Political Retribution

McGuire also defended himself against the attorney general, issuing a statement saying, “Let me be absolutely clear: This is not justice. It is political retribution.”

“Letitia James weaponized her office to target me because I dared to speak against her radical, pro-abortion policies,” he said, calling the investigation “politically motivated.”

McGuire added:

For more than three years, her office harassed my family, my staff, and my ministry – demanding donor lists, monitoring bank accounts, and threatening my wife.

In the end, they manufactured a case over three minor omissions totaling $1,283.76 on a campaign finance report unrelated to New York Families. Rather than drain a quarter-million dollars fighting an overzealous prosecution, I accepted a misdemeanor plea.

McGuire explained that the Attorney General’s “investigation was sparked by an unfounded 2018 complaint from a political rival,” explaining New York Families had produced over 7,000 pages of documents in response to subpoenas. In addition:

  • The AG’s office demanded donor lists, sermon recordings, and private information on New York Families’ supporters.
  • Attorney General Letitia James falsely claimed that McGuire “lined his own pockets” – a statement his attorney deemed libelous.
  • The Office of the Attorney General targeted “other businesses and organizations connected to Jason” and monitored NYFF and NYFA’s bank accounts – as well as his personal account.

“Throughout most of this period,” the board said, “Jason, NYFF and NYFA were kept in the dark as to what (if any) crimes the OAG believed them to have committed.”

After several years of harassment, “on the advice of legal counsel, and in consultation with the Board,” McGuire pled guilty “to two misdemeanors arising out of the filing of incorrect campaign finance disclosure documents relating to Jason’s political activities.”

Continuing to fight the charges could have cost McGuire around $250,000.

The attacks on McGuire did not end with his guilty plea. In her announcement of his conviction, Attorney General James mischaracterized the case, stating he had “abused his position in the New York Conservative Party to line his own pockets with party funds and cover up his theft.”

Attorney General Letitia James Investigated for Fraud

While engaging in the attack on McGuire, Attorney General James is herself under fire for mortgage fraud involving properties in Norfolk, Virginia and Brooklyn, New York, National Mortgage Professional reported.

Following a referral from the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), the U.S. Department of Justice began a criminal investigation of allegations against her. According to the news outlet:

  • James is accused of falsely claiming a Norfolk, Virginia home as her primary residence in 2023 to secure better mortgage rates, despite her official residence being in New York.
  • FHFA alleged that James misrepresented a five-unit Brooklyn brownstone as a four-unit property to qualify for a loan intended for smaller multifamily homes, and claimed this happened multiple times dating back to the early 2000s.
  • An additional claim involves a 1983 mortgage document where James and her father allegedly signed as husband and wife, potentially to meet lending requirements. The two also listed themselves as married in documentation 17 years later in May 2000, FHFA alleged.

According to Newsweek, James replied to the allegations saying, “Let me just say to all New Yorkers and all Americans: the allegations are baseless. The allegations are nothing more than a revenge tour.”

But George Washington University School of Business Associate Professor Kyle Welch told Newsweek the allegations could lead to jail time and disbarment. He called the charges ironic, since James has stated, “Nobody is above the law.”

Board Support for McGuire

The board of directors of New York Families Foundation and New York Families Action continue in their support of McGuire, saying, “The Board does not believe that Jason engaged in any intentional wrongdoing whatsoever.”

Despite the persecution of McGuire, New York Families Board asked for prayer for Attorney General Letitia James and her staff, citing 1 Timothy 2:2 which calls Christians to pray for leaders and those in authority, adding we should do so “even when those leaders do wrong.”

They also asked for prayer for Jason McGuire as he endures his sentence and for the ongoing work of NYFF and NYFA.

New York Families Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is an “educational and engagement organization” that promotes family, faith and life in the Empire state. The Focus on the Family affiliated organization equips and empowers Christians to engage with important culture and policy issues according to their Christian values.

New York Families Action is a 501(c)(4) that engages in political advocacy to promote religious liberty, protect human life, and support marriages, parenting and families.

Puerto Rico Passes Law Banning Transgender Medical Interventions for Minors

Puerto Rico has recently joined 27 U.S. states in banning transgender medical interventions for minors.

The Law for the Protection of the Health and Well-being of Minors in Puerto Rico (Senate Bill 350), was signed by Puerto Rico Governor Jennifer Gonzalez Colon earlier this month.

The bill “prohibits medical or surgical procedures that alter the sexual biology of minors under the pretext of gender transition, including irreversible hormone interventions.” This includes banning puberty-blocking drugs, androgen blockers, and the prescription of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

The law states:

Minors, having not yet reached the necessary emotional, cognitive, and physical maturity, are particularly vulnerable to making decisions that could have irreversible consequences.

Therefore, it is the State’s duty to ensure their comprehensive well-being, protecting them from decisions that could affect their long-term health, especially when these decisions involve irreversible changes in their anatomy and biology.

Additionally, Senate Bill 350 prohibits people under 21-years-old from receiving “surgical procedures that modify or remove sexual organs with the goal of altering their natural biological function, as well as interventions intended to align a minor’s physical appearance with an identity other than their biological sex.”

Violators of the law will face up to 15 years in prison and a $50,000 fine. Any healthcare worker found performing transgender medical interventions may also have their license revoked.

The bill follows a report by the American College of Pediatrics, identifying several serious side effects of puberty blockers. These include osteoporosis, mood disorders, seizures and cognitive impairment, as well as an increased risk of sterility, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, blood clots and cancers.

The study states:

There is not a single long-term study to demonstrate the safety or efficacy of puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgeries for transgender-believing youth.

Puberty blockers may actually cause depression and other emotional disturbances related to suicide.

In addition, there is unpublished evidence that after a year on [puberty blockers] children reported greater self-harm, and the girls also experienced more behavioral and emotional problems and expressed greater dissatisfaction with their body — so puberty blockers exacerbated gender dysphoria.

Earlier this year, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order titled, “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation,” which reads:

Countless children soon regret that they have been mutilated and begin to grasp the horrifying tragedy that they will never be able to conceive children of their own or nurture their children through breastfeeding.

Moreover, these vulnerable youths’ medical bills may rise throughout their lifetimes, as they are often trapped with lifelong medical complications, a losing war with their own bodies, and, tragically, sterilization.

Accordingly, it is the policy of the United States that it will not fund, sponsor, promote, assist, or support the so-called “transition” of a child from one sex to another, and it will rigorously enforce all laws that prohibit or limit these destructive and life-altering procedures.

Additionally, the Supreme Court recently ruled in United States v. Skrmetti that Tennessee’s prohibition of puberty blocking drugs, opposite-sex hormones and surgeries for minors did not violate the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause.

Now, Puerto Rico’s law is another step forward in protecting our youth from dangerous and experimental transgender medical interventions. Every person is created in God’s image, and we must encourage our children to affirm His good design for males and females.

Research Shows New Data on Divorce Risk

The lifetime risk of divorce is not 50%, as so many assume.

This is the finding from a new sophisticated research analysis from the careful scholars at the Institute for Family Studies (IFS). They explain that the hope of a lifelong marriage is “no longer a coin toss.” The analysis was conducted by Yifeng Wan, a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Virginia. He explains, “My best estimate is that about 42% of first marriages today will eventually end in divorce if current patterns persist.”

While a 42% divorce risk is not great news, it is notably lower than the incorrect 50% divorce rate we often hear repeated. It is also important to appreciate that the 42% divorce risk applies to no individual or couple in particular because this is a prediction from overall populations.

As previous research done by Focus on the Family demonstrates, many couples marrying today actually have a dramatically lower risk of lifetime divorce because they have made life choices and have advantages that dramatically elevate their risk of building a successful marriage. This includes things like not cohabiting or engaging in sexual intimacy prior to marriage, sharing a common serious religious faith, growing up in an intact family, and marrying before having children.

This helpful new report from IFS is very beneficial because it explains the demographic complexities of predicting divorce risk in a very concise and straightforward way. Intelligent and quick, it’s valuable reading for all curious students of the family. You can access it here.
