Texas Pro-Life Law Saves 40,000 Babies in One Year From Abortion

One year ago, Texas’ Heartbeat Bill took effect. The bill prohibits abortions if a preborn baby has a heartbeat, which generally occurs around six weeks gestation.

Since the bill went into effect, an estimated 40,000 lives of preborn babies have been saved.

This is very encouraging news and a tribute to the great work of pro-life activists in The Lone Star State and around the country.

Now, it’s important to understand that these 40,000 preborn babies have been saved in one year alone – in just one state.

If Texas continues to restrict abortion over the next 10 years, pro-life laws in the state will be responsible for saving 400,000 lives. That’s truly remarkable.

And consider, over the next several decades, how many new lives these 400,000 people will create.

Is it too much to speculate that because of the courage of pro-life activists, voters and lawmakers in Texas, millions of people will be alive who otherwise wouldn’t be?

I don’t think it is.

Kimberlyn Schwartz, Director of Media & Communications for Texas Right to Life, spoke with LifeNews about the success that the Heartbeat Bill has had.

After the Heartbeat Bill was enacted on September 1, 2021, it faced, and survived, numerous legal challenges in state and federal courts.

Several months later, the U.S. Supreme Court decided in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to overturn Roe v. Wade and return lawmaking authority over abortion completely back to the states.

Jonathan Saenz, President of Texas Values, a Focus-allied organization, told the Daily Citizen, “The Texas Heartbeat Law and its ability to prevail three times at the U. S. Supreme Court paved the way for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, by demonstrating that it is possible to protect all human life at the state level.

“The real victory is, though, is the estimated over 40,000 babies who have been saved from abortion in the 365 days since this pro-life law went into effect. We now have a unique opportunity, as a united pro-life movement and society, to come alongside women and babies to ensure they have ready access to the resources and community they need to thrive because life is a human right.

Frequently, pro-abortion activists like to accuse pro-life supporters of only caring about preborn babies, while not caring about the life or health of the mother.

Texas decided to tackle that myth head-on, and allocated $100 million to support mothers with care, counseling, baby supplies, housing, employment classes and other resources.

In addition, after enacting its Heartbeat Bill, Texas wasn’t done yet.

The state’s trigger law that provides babies with even more protection from abortion just took effect on August 25, 2022.

The law bans all abortions except to save the life of the mother, or in the case of severe health complications.

Kudos to Texas – a model state that protects both preborn babies and cares for mothers.
