Proposed Federal Resolution Condemns Socialism, Democratic Socialists of America

A new resolution in the House of Representatives condemns socialism and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) as “incompatible with American values and the United States Constitution.”

The resolution, which Rep. Jeff Crank, Colo. introduced on Friday, asks the House to:

• “Condemn and denounce socialism in all its forms, including the Democratic Socialists of America, and oppose the implementation of socialist policies in the United States.”
• “Reaffirm its support for free, fair and secure elections.”
• “Reiterate that American elections are for American citizens only.”
• “Recommit itself to upholding the Constitution of the United States.”
• “Call for the enactment of the SAVE America Act to ensure election security, increase public confidence in America’s voting system, and close loopholes in order to prevent noncitizens from voting in elections.”

The resolution begins by connecting the DSA, a membership organization espousing democratic socialism, and socialism to the brutal legacy of communism. It’s right to do so.

Democratic socialism and communism, or Marxism-Leninism, are both types of socialism — an economic and social ideology devised by German philosopher Karl Marx in the 19th century.

Marx believed all history boiled down to a series of conflicts between the working and upper classes. Marx claimed the working class would inevitably triumph over their oppressors, the upper class, through violent revolution.

Democratic socialism emerged after Marx’s death. It calls for a socialist economy administered by a political democracy. Unlike Marx, democratic socialists do not believe violent revolution is inevitable or necessary. They ostensibly seek to oust capitalism through existing political systems.

Communism likewise developed after Marx died, under the leadership of Vladimir Lenin. Lenin believed violent revolution was necessary, but not inevitable. He thought the working class needed to be taught to revolt by a class of “professional revolutionaries.”

Despite their differences, democratic socialism and communism remain socialist ideologies. That means, in short, that both seek to abolish private property and establish government control of shared resources.

Crank’s resolution highlights some of the historical consequences of implementing systems like these, including:

• A concentration of power which repeatedly and predictably devolves into violent, totalitarian dictatorships and communist regimes.
• Famine.
• Mass murder.

According to “Denouncing the Horrors of Socialism,” a resolution the House passed on November 21, 2025, socialist ideologies are responsible for at least 100,000,000 deaths around the world.

The ideological connections between socialism, democratic socialism and communism should make Americans wary of democratic socialists supposed commitment to non-violence. Socialism is inherently revolutionary.

Further, many Americans, particularly on the political left, feel political violence can be justified in at least some circumstances.

In a 2025, nationally representative survey of nearly 1,300 American adults, the Network Contagion Research Institute and Rutgers University’s Social Perception Lab found 32% and 39% of respondents felt it would be at least partially justified to murder Elon Musk and President Donald Trump, respectively. Nearly 40% felt it would be at least partially justified to destroy Tesla dealerships.

Respondents who identified themselves as politically left-of-center demonstrated significantly higher willingness to justify political violence. More than half of respondents in the category said to would be at least partially justified to murder Musk (50%) and the president (56%). Nearly 60% felt it would be at least partially justified to destroy a Tesla dealership.

After linking socialism, democratic socialism and communism, Crank’s resolution goes on to describe the DSA’s threat to America’s political structure and election integrity. It specifically notes the group’s proposal to abolish the Senate, setting fire to the U.S. Constitution as we know it.

And that’s not all the organization is shilling for. It also wants to:

• Abolish the Electoral College.
• Expand the House of Representatives.
• Replace the executive and judicial branches with an executive and judiciary chosen and controlled by the House of Representatives.

The DSA further advocates for letting noncitizens and incarcerated criminals vote, which the resolution argues compromises America’s free and fair elections.

“American citizens being able to securely cast their votes at the ballot box is a right that the DSA is actively working to undermine,” Crank wrote in an X post on Friday.

Ensuring secure, free and fair elections is one of America’s national priorities, the resolution implies, noting the legislative and executive branches have each taken steps to achieve this goal. The House has passed bills like the SAVE Act and SAVE America Act, which would require voters to show photo ID and proof of citizenship at the ballot box. The federal government has given states access to the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE), which helps identify and remove illegal aliens from voter rolls.

Despite these efforts, evidence of illegal aliens voting in elections continues to make headlines. Meanwhile, the DSA proudly threatens to further erode election security by making voter fraud one of its policy goals.

It is good for leaders like Crank to bring attention to the rise of damaging ideologies in America. It’s so easy to forget socialism’s bloody history when organizations like the DSA promise the world — free healthcare; free school; no war; no crime.

But empty promises don’t change reality: When socialism and its derivatives are applied to a sinful, broken world, they produce horrible, evil outcomes every time.

The problem is socialism relies on a false claim: humanity is essentially good. Marx believed capitalism was the root of all evil. He thought abolishing capitalism would cure our need for government all together.

Similarly, democratic socialists like the DSA believe bad choices are shaped by bad systems. If we no longer experienced need and want, they argue, we would no longer make evil choices.

But the Bible teaches us this is folly. Though we are made in the image of God, we are fallen creatures. Romans 3:23 tells us, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Jesus Christ’s sacrifice saves those who believe in Him. His grace is sufficient for us, even as we continue to make mistakes.

Good governance harnesses humanity’s triumphs and guards against its sinful nature. A system which relies on humanity’s essential perfection will always lead to disaster.
