Following the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, much of our national conversation has turned once again to Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court opinion which declared abortion legal throughout the country.

Unlike what you may have heard, the average American supports significant restrictions on abortion.

Now that Roe has reentered the public debate, many articles, tweets and polls have come out showing how most Americans, ostensibly, support keeping Roe v. Wade in place.

For example, Yahoo News published an article on September 20, following Justice Ginsburg’s death, titled, “63% of Americans support Roe v. Wade as fears grow of overruling.”

However, it’s likely many Americans wrongly assume that if Roe were to be overturned, abortion would be outlawed. This isn’t the case. Were the 1973 court decision to be reversed, the question of whether abortion should be legal or not would go back for each individual state to decide.

And on that question, a plurality of Americans agree. According to a recent poll, 46% of Americans believe that the Supreme Court should reconsider Roe to allow each state to determine its own abortion policy.

Additionally, the same recent poll found 70% of Americans “favor limiting abortion either to the first three months of pregnancy or to cases of rape, incest, and to save the mother’s life… Just 21 percent of respondents said abortion should be available at any stage of pregnancy, the position espoused by the Democratic party’s platform.”

A Gallup poll recently confirmed that 74% of Americans want abortion either illegal or only legal “under certain circumstances.” Just 25% of Americans want legal abortion under any circumstance.

Americans’ views on abortion have changed over the years, and pro-life Americans have the chance to once again convince our fellow citizens to protect life in the womb.
