Michigan’s Prop 3 Goes Much Further Than Legalizing Abortion—It Targets Children and Families

Michigan’s pro-abortion measure, Proposal 3, is radical. It does much more than codify abortion. It is a targeted attack on children and families by creating rights for minors to not only get abortions without parental consent or notification but also for minors to seek and receive gender reassignment surgeries without parental involvement.
As reported by the Daily Citizen, life is on the ballot in five states this November, including California, Kentucky, Montana, Vermont and Michigan. In Montana and Kentucky, the vote is a vote to protect preborn human life in the womb. In California, Vermont and Michigan, it’s a vote to establish a pro-abortion constitutional amendment.
As if legalizing abortions for minors without parental consent or notification wasn’t bad enough, in the case of Michigan, Prop 3 goes far beyond legalizing abortion. A vote in favor of Prop 3 would also be a vote in favor of the genital maiming of minors.
Lest the reader thinks this claim is mere hyperbole, let’s examine the measure’s language and then consider options available to minors if this initiative is passed.
As explained by The Federalist, “it’s right in the text of the amendment.” They break it down below.
“(1) Every individual has a fundamental right to reproductive freedom, which entails the right to make and effectuate decisions about all matters relating to pregnancy, including but not limited to prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, contraception, sterilization, abortion care, miscarriage management, and infertility care. An individual’s right to reproductive freedom shall not be denied, burdened, nor infringed upon unless justified by a compelling state interest achieved by the least restrictive means. …
“(2) The state shall not discriminate in the protection or enforcement of this fundamental right.
* * *
“(4) For the purposes of this section:
A state interest is “compelling” only if it is for the limited purpose of protecting the health of an individual seeking care, consistent with accepted clinical standards of practice and evidence-based medicine, and does not infringe on that individual’s autonomous decision-making.
* * *
“(5) This section shall be self-executing….”
The language is clear. The fundamental “right to reproductive freedom” applies to every individual. And it includes the right to sterilization. Prop 3 declares that this right “shall not be denied” unless there is a compelling state interest but then says that a compelling state interest cannot “infringe on the individual’s autonomous decision-making.”
Margot Cleveland, attorney and writer for The Federalist, says, “As a matter of constitutional interpretation, then, the rights guaranteed by Prop 3 would be rights that both adults and children possess as ‘individuals,’ and the rights apply equally to males and females.”
So, if this amendment passes, minor boys and girls in Michigan will have a state-protected constitutional “right” to gender reassignment, hormone therapy, amputation of reproductive parts, or even sterilization without consent or notification of parents.
And Planned Parenthood of Michigan is ready and willing to assist in the efforts of gender-affirming care. The abortion giant currently offers gender-affirming hormone therapy and will expand its offerings to telehealth visits soon. Hormone therapy includes permanent and irreversible side effects, including reduced fertility. Currently, the services are only available to patients 18 years old or older, but if Prop 3 passes, the age stipulation will likely disappear.
The Heritage Foundation writes that because the language of Prop 3 is so vague, “probably by design” voters “could unwittingly be rejecting…the rights of parents to protect and direct the upbringing of their minor children.”
Experts at Heritage Foundation contend, “Parents are best equipped to protect and care for their child’s well-being. They have both the right and responsibility to do so. Proposition 3 would take that right away and leave it up to minors or the influence of other adult gender ideologues.”
Yes, indeed. Prop 3 appears to be a targeted attack on parental rights and the family. Its aims go far beyond legalized abortion. Its goal seems to be the propagation of radical positions far outside mainstream norms.
Prop 3 appears to be a tool to legalize late-term abortion, validate the gruesome practice of partial-birth abortion, equip leftists to confuse children about their sexuality, usurp the authority of parents to direct the upbringing of their children and their medical care, and an effort to destabilize the family.
Michigan voters should see past the efforts of the Left to label Prop 3 as only an abortion measure. Prop 3 is an attack on minors and the family and should be voted down.
