Support for Same-Sex Marriage and Relationships Declines Among Conservatives

This June marks the tenth anniversary of the United States Supreme Court neutering and redefining marriage in the troubling Obergefell decision. Gallup is now reporting that support for both same-sex marriage and same-sex relationships has been declining of late for all U.S. adults and substantially among conservatives.

Only 27% of Americans supported the idea of de-gendering marriage in 1996. That support rose to a remarkable 42% in 2004 and in 2016, the year following Obergefell, support climbed to 61% and has remained above that mark ever since, at 68% support today. However, support for gay marriage has declined from its high-water mark of 71% support among all American adults in 2022 and 2023. It will be interesting to see if this decline continues in the years to come.

Yet, the big news comes in conservative’s view of both gay marriage and same-sex relationships. While support for same-sex marriage among republicans peaked in 2021 and 2022 at 55%, that support has now plummeted to 41% in 2025. According to Gallup, this is “the lowest point since 2016 after the Obergefell decision.” Support for de-gendered marriage has only seen overall growth among Democrats, reaching a high this year of 88% support. Gallup reports, “The current 47-point gap between Republicans and Democrats is the largest since Gallup first began tracking this measure 29 years ago.”

The growth and decline trend lines in support of same-sex marriage since 1997 to 2025 look like this.

Gallup explains conservative support for gay marriage “has only reached the majority level twice, with 55% readings in 2021 and 2022” adding that “it has since been on the decline.”

Declining Support for Same-Sex Relationships

American’s support for the “moral acceptability of same-sex relationships, as Gallup phrased the question, reached its height in 2022 at 71%, but has declined to a steady 64% since 2023. Support for same-sex relationship among conservatives has sunk from a 56% high in 2022 to a dramatically low 38% approval rating this year.

Approval for such relationships is slowly climbing among Democrats. The overall national trend lines since 2001 look like this.

Declines in favorable ratings among Americans for same-sex marriage and relationships is a very hopeful sign. Both have chipped away at the importance of the natural family founded upon the inherent goodness of male and female love and cooperation in bringing forth the next generation of humanity and the founding of families.

Perhaps, this is exactly why such support is declining. American citizens, especially conservatives, are realizing that neutering marriage with Obergefell’s radical redefinition has led directly to the gender craziness that we are seeing today. They want to scale it back.

When male and female do not matter to marriage and the family – which is exactly the argument gay marriage advocates put forward for over a decade – then male and female have no essential meaning. Mere preference.

It is therefore an easy leap to say “gender” as male or female are mere feelings and can be changed by declaration. Everyone is required to play along with the lie and never speak the truth. That is how we ended up with men in women’s locker rooms, sports competitions and prisons as an essential human right, worthy of canceling anyone who does not agree.

Or maybe more Americans are increasingly tired of seeing too many injustices like this, this, this, this, this, and this toward children who are intentionally denied their mother or father in order to fulfill adult desire. People are changing their minds about the lies they were sold about “marriage equality.”

“Love” does not make a family. A loving mother and father do, through marriage.

Let us pray that these declines continue, and that people see neutered marriage and the family for the radical injustices they are to common sense, children, women and society.
